Staying Present
Staying Present in the New Year:
If you are anything like me, you start every new year with the best of intentions. However, staying present and focused on our goals can be difficult. Staying in the current moment is even more challenging for teens, students, and adults with anxiety and depression.
We might be humming along and working on an important task when all of a sudden our brain shouts, "WAIT, what are you going to do when you lose all your money and everyone you know moves out of town?" or, "You should really get up and clean your entire house before finishing your homework," or, "You are really going to suck at this so you might as well stop before you make yourself look like a fool."
I don't know about you all but this is a huge issue for me. My brain gets cluttered with thoughts and worries that prevent me from staying in the current moment and doing whatever thing I need to be doing right at that exact moment. A good friend of mine recently introduced me to a tool that she uses to combat these types of thoughts. I apologize for the curse words....but when my friend shared this tool with me they made me laugh and reminded me to not take my life to seriously.
When you find your thoughts drifting away from the present, print out this worksheet, and ask yourself, "What shit do I need to be doing right now?" and, "What important shit am I not doing now? and, "What bullshit am I thinking about now but don't need to worry about."
Enjoy!
